The FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers table is now final. Qualifying is complete, and all 48 places at the first expanded World Cup were decided when Iraq beat Bolivia 2-1 in the last inter-confederation play-off on 31 March 2026. This page gives the final standings that mattered most. It covers the full CONMEBOL table, Nigeria’s CAF group, the play-off results, and how each confederation filled its places.
The tournament itself was played from 11 June to 19 July 2026 in the USA, Canada and Mexico. So this is a record of how the 48 teams got there, not a live table. For today’s fixtures across all competitions, see our scores and fixtures hub.

CONMEBOL World Cup 2026 Qualifiers Table (Final)
South America used a single league of 10 teams. Each side played 18 matches, home and away against every opponent. The top six qualified directly, and the seventh-placed team entered the inter-confederation play-off. This is the CONMEBOL World Cup 2026 qualifiers table as it finished in September 2025.
| Pos | Team | Pld | Pts | GD | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Argentina | 18 | 38 | +21 | Qualified |
| 2 | Ecuador | 18 | 29* | +9 | Qualified |
| 3 | Colombia | 18 | 28 | +10 | Qualified |
| 4 | Uruguay | 18 | 28 | +10 | Qualified |
| 5 | Brazil | 18 | 28 | +7 | Qualified |
| 6 | Paraguay | 18 | 28 | +4 | Qualified |
| 7 | Bolivia | 18 | 20 | -18 | Play-off |
| 8 | Venezuela | 18 | 18 | -10 | Eliminated |
| 9 | Peru | 18 | 12 | -15 | Eliminated |
| 10 | Chile | 18 | 11 | -18 | Eliminated |
Argentina finished nine points clear. They won 12 of their 18 games and conceded only 10 goals. Ecuador came second despite the three-point deduction, thanks to the best defensive record in the group, with just five goals against. Four teams finished level on 28 points, and goal difference separated them. That is why Brazil finished fifth. Brazil’s qualifying campaign was a long story in itself (our Neymar profile covers how injuries shaped it).
Bolivia’s 20 points earned them the play-off place, mostly through results at altitude in El Alto. Venezuela missed out by two points, and Peru and Chile finished bottom.

World Cup Qualifiers Table Africa: Nigeria’s Group C
CAF split its 54 entrants into nine groups of six. The nine group winners qualified directly, and the four best runners-up went into a mini play-off in Morocco to decide who would go to the inter-confederation play-off. This was the World Cup qualifiers table for Africa’s Group C, Nigeria’s group:
| Pos | Team | Pld | Pts | GD | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | South Africa | 10 | 18 | +6 | Qualified |
| 2 | Nigeria | 10 | 17 | +7 | CAF play-off |
| 3 | Benin | 10 | 17 | +1 | Eliminated |
| 4 | Lesotho | 10 | 12 | -3 | Eliminated |
| 5 | Rwanda | 10 | 11 | -4 | Eliminated |
| 6 | Zimbabwe | 10 | 5 | -7 | Eliminated |
Draws cost the Super Eagles: they drew five of their ten games. A 4-0 win over Benin on the final matchday took them into second on goal difference. South Africa won the group by a single point, even after FIFA awarded their win over Lesotho to Lesotho because Bafana Bafana had fielded an ineligible player. For the current squad and the players who came through this campaign, see our Nigeria national football team players guide.
Nigeria’s CAF play-off route
In Rabat, Nigeria beat Gabon 4-1 after extra time on 13 November 2025. DR Congo won the other semi-final 1-0. The final, three days later, finished 1-1 after extra time, with Frank Onyeka scoring early for Nigeria before Meschack Elia equalised. DR Congo won the shootout 4-3 and took Africa’s place in the inter-confederation play-off. Victor Osimhen was Nigeria’s key striker (see our Victor Osimhen profile).

How Many Teams From Each Continent? World Cup 2026 Slots
Before expansion, a 32-team World Cup gave Africa five places. The 48-team format almost doubled that. These were the final places by confederation:
| Confederation | Places | Teams |
|---|---|---|
| UEFA | 16 | 12 group winners + 4 play-off winners |
| CAF | 9 + 1 | Nine group winners + DR Congo (via play-off) |
| AFC | 8 + 1 | Eight direct + Iraq (via play-off) |
| CONCACAF | 3 + 3 | Hosts USA, Mexico and Canada + Panama, Haiti, Curaçao |
| CONMEBOL | 6 | Top six of the league table |
| OFC | 1 | New Zealand |
The nine African group winners were Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Ghana, Cabo Verde, South Africa, Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire. With DR Congo added, Africa had its biggest ever contingent. If you follow African football closely, our AFCON Women coverage tracks the continent’s other big tournament.

UEFA, AFC, CONCACAF and OFC: Qualifying Outcomes
UEFA: Twelve group winners qualified directly, including England, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands and Norway. Norway were back for the first time since 1998, and our Norway vs England stats page shows how far they have come. In March 2026, four play-off paths sent Czechia, Türkiye, Sweden and Bosnia and Herzegovina to the finals. Bosnia came through two penalty shootouts.
AFC: Japan, Iran, Uzbekistan, South Korea, Jordan, Australia, Qatar and Saudi Arabia qualified directly. Uzbekistan and Jordan reached their first World Cup. Iraq later added a ninth Asian team through the play-off.
CONCACAF: As hosts, the USA, Mexico and Canada did not need to qualify. Panama, Haiti and Curaçao won their final-round groups. Curaçao became the smallest nation by population ever to qualify.
OFC: New Zealand won Oceania’s only direct place. New Caledonia went to the play-off.
