Man City v PSG: the Champions League game of the week

The Man City v PSG Champions League game was the pick of the highlights. The reigning champions PSG dominated the first half, and City hit the woodwork twice in the second half as their comeback fell short. In stoppage time, City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma saved a penalty from PSG’s Ferran Torres. Haaland’s double made him City’s record scorer in the competition. Mbappé breaks Messi’s 100-game record

Kylian Mbappé became the youngest player to make 100 UEFA Champions League appearances, at 27 years and 298 days. That beats Lionel Messi’s mark of 28 years and 84 days, set in 2015. He scored on the night and moved fifth on the competition’s all-time scoring list. For more on Madrid’s squad, read the latest Real Madrid news on Mbappé.

How does the UEFA Champions League format work?

The UEFA Champions League no longer uses a groups table. Since 2024/25, all 36 clubs play in one league phase, and 2026/27 is the third season of this format. Each club plays eight matches, four at home and four away, against eight different opponents.

Qualification rules after the league phase:

  1. 1st–8th: direct qualification to the round of 16.
  2. 9th–24th: knockout phase play-offs (two legs) for the other eight round of 16 places.
  3. 25th–36th: eliminated, with no drop into the Europa League.

The league phase ends after Matchday 8 in January 2027. The play-off winners then join the top eight, and the UEFA Champions League round of 16 draw sets the knockout path to the final. Unlike the old format, the final league-phase positions decide seeding, so every goal counts. That is why goal difference matters so much in a nine-way tie at the top.

Who are the UEFA Champions League top scorers so far?

Per ESPN, three players share the top scorer spot after two matchdays:

  • Erling Haaland (Manchester City): 4 goals
  • Ermedin Demirović (VfB Stuttgart): 4 goals
  • Nicolò Tresoldi: 4 goals
  • Harry Kane (Bayern Munich) and Nicolas Jackson: 3 goals each

Lamine Yamal leads the assist chart with 4 for Barcelona (per ESPN), ahead of Ousmane Dembélé on 3. Barcelona’s domestic form matters too: follow it in our football news and analysis. Fitness will shape the next round too, so check our daily football injury updates before Matchday 3. Liverpool are still without Alexander Isak, for example.
