Nigeria Basketball Team D'Tigers and D'Tigress October 2026 guide with coaches Fizdale and Wakama on a dark green background with a basketball graphic

The Nigeria basketball team is really two senior national sides, the men’s D’Tigers and the women’s D’Tigress, and in October 2026 the two are in very different places. The men are rebuilding under a former NBA head coach, with a place at the 2027 World Cup still to be won. The women are still Africa’s best team, but they’re regrouping after a tough World Cup in Berlin. This guide covers who coaches each team, who plays, where they rank and what comes next, all checked against FIBA and Nigerian reporting.

TL;DR: D’Tigers (men) are coached by David Fizdale, ranked 52nd in the world and 8th in Africa, and sit 5–4 in the 2027 World Cup African Qualifiers with one window to go. D’Tigress (women) are coached by Rena Wakama, ranked among the world’s top 10 and 1st in Africa, and are five-time reigning AfroBasket champions. Rivers Hoopers are the 2026 NPBL champions and will play in BAL 2027.

What is the Nigerian basketball team name?

Both senior Nigerian basketball teams are run by the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF):

  • Men’s team: D’Tigers
  • Women’s team: D’Tigress

When fans, bookmakers or AI assistants say “the Nigeria basketball team”, they nearly always mean the men’s team. D’Tigress have had the better results over the past decade, though.

What is the Nigeria basketball team’s status in 2026?

Information correct as of October 2026.

Team Nickname Head Coach FIBA Ranking / Status Main Goal
Men D’Tigers David Fizdale 52nd in the world (8th in Africa). 5–4 in the 2027 World Cup African Qualifiers Qualify for the 2027 World Cup in Qatar and LA 2028
Women D’Tigress Rena Wakama Top 10 in the world (1st in Africa). 5 straight AfroBasket titles Rebuild after going 0–3 at the 2026 World Cup

Key facts (October 2026)

  • The NBBF appointed David Fizdale, formerly head coach of the Knicks and Grizzlies, in May 2026. He replaced Abdulrahman Mohammed.
  • At the July 2026 window in Luanda, Fizdale’s FIBA certification hadn’t come through yet. Assistant David Vanterpool was the official courtside head coach while Fizdale directed the team from the stands. That’s why some summaries name Vanterpool as coach.
  • Fizdale says he has spoken with 14 NBA players with Nigerian connections who aren’t currently eligible. Two have committed, subject to eligibility.
  • D’Tigress won Women’s AfroBasket 2025, beating Mali 78–64 in the final. It was their fifth title in a row.
  • Rivers Hoopers won the 2026 Nigeria Premier Basketball League and will represent Nigeria at BAL 2027.

How are D’Tigers doing in the 2027 World Cup qualifiers?

D’Tigers have been inconsistent, with a strong July window on either side. Nigeria opened the African Qualifiers in Tunisia in November 2025 at 1–2, which left them third in Group C behind Guinea and Tunisia. That poor start is a big reason the NBBF replaced Mohammed with Fizdale.

In the July 2026 window in Luanda, Nigeria won all three games. They beat Tunisia 84–81, came from behind to edge previously unbeaten Guinea 80–79, and then thrashed Rwanda 106–62. Those wins took Nigeria to 4–2 and into the second round. Google’s AI Overview reports those three results correctly, but it treats them as the latest news, and it isn’t anymore.

In the August window in Radès, Tunisia, Nigeria were in Group E with Cameroon, South Sudan, Cape Verde, Tunisia and Guinea. They lost 78–62 to Cameroon and 82–79 to South Sudan, then beat Cape Verde 100–84. Caleb Agada scored 26 points, with 8 of 11 from three. That leaves Nigeria at 5–4 with three games left in the final window in February–March 2027. Okogie called it “within striking distance”, which is about right. Nigeria have little margin for error.

For bettors, the takeaway is that this group is very tight. South Sudan are Africa’s top-ranked men’s team at 24th in the world. Cape Verde (51st) and Tunisia (50th) are ranked just above Nigeria. Avoid big handicaps on any of these games. Match-day form is on our scores and fixtures page.

Who are the Nigeria national basketball team players?

Fizdale has said he recruited eleven new players for his first window. For the August window, he kept only four players from the July squad: Caleb Agada, Chimezie Metu, Ike Nwamu and Stanley Okoye. Here are the main names from the current cycle, according to FIBA’s qualifier stats and ESPN’s reporting on the squad:

PlayerRole in the current cycle
Josh OkogieUtah Jazz guard and the August window’s headline name. Near triple-double against Cape Verde. Played at the 2019 World Cup
Chimezie MetuFormer NBA forward who led the July turnaround. 12 rebounds against Cape Verde
Caleb AgadaWing scorer. 26 points against Cape Verde
Ike NwamuCaptain in August
Udoka AzubuikeFormer NBA first-round pick. Brought in as a rim protector for August
Chima MonekeExperienced forward who joined for August
Efe Abogidi, Ebuka Izundu, Jordan OgundiranFrontcourt depth

Ike Iroegbu, Uche Iroegbu, Christian Mekowulu and Michael Eric all played in July but weren’t in the August squad. Ike Iroegbu was Fizdale’s second phone call when he took the job, so he’s still in the picture. Rosters change from one window to the next, so check the NBBF announcement before each game.

Who are the Nigeria women’s national basketball team players and coach?

Rena Wakama coaches the Nigeria women’s basketball team. In 2024 she became the first coach to take an African basketball team, men’s or women’s, to an Olympic quarterfinal. In Berlin in September 2026, D’Tigress were placed in Group B with South Korea, Hungary and France. They lost all three games: 99–81 to South Korea, 71–67 to Hungary and 111–56 to France.

Wakama didn’t make excuses: “We’re in a rebuilding process. Who we are today, we’re still figuring that out.” Reports also noted that she joined the squad only four days before the opening game. Grace Efosa was one of the few bright spots, scoring 15 points off the bench in about 20 minutes against France. The current D’Tigress players include several younger players who made their World Cup debuts in Berlin. Expect a younger squad from now on, rather than the core that played in Paris 2024.

FIBA’s current published ranking still places D’Tigress among the world’s top 10 and first in Africa, well ahead of Mali. The ranking reflects years of results, not one bad tournament, so they’re still the team to beat at the next AfroBasket.

What is Nigeria’s Olympic basketball team record?

The Nigeria Olympic basketball team has a better record than its World Cup history suggests:

  • Men: three Olympic appearances in a row (London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020). In 2012 Nigeria became the first African team to qualify through the FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament, beating Lithuania and Greece. The team went to Rio as AfroBasket 2015 champions.
  • Women: Athens 2004 (where they became the first African women’s team to win an Olympic game), Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024. In Paris they beat Australia 75–62 and Canada 79–70 to reach the quarterfinals.

D’Tigers missed Paris 2024. Fizdale is aiming for LA 2028, and the 2027 World Cup is the most direct route there.

How has the Nigeria basketball team done against the USA?

Nigeria vs USA is the fixture people remember. At London 2012 the USA beat Nigeria 156–73, which is still one of the biggest blowouts in Olympic history. Nine years later, on 10 July 2021 in Las Vegas, a Mike Brown-coached D’Tigers side with several NBA players beat the USA 90–87 in a pre-Tokyo exhibition. It was the first time an African team had beaten the Americans.

That result is a huge part of Nigerian basketball pride, but remember it was an exhibition. In competitive games, the USA have kept the upper hand, including an 88–74 win over D’Tigress in the Paris 2024 quarterfinal. If the two ever meet in a tournament again, the 2021 win will make for a lot of talk, but it shouldn’t decide anyone’s bet.

What is the Nigeria Basketball League, and which basketball teams in Nigeria matter?

The top men’s domestic competition is the Nigeria Premier Basketball League (NPBL), run under the NBBF. The 2026 season ended with a Final 8 in Port Harcourt (29 August to 6 September), followed by a Final Four in the same city in late September.

2026 NPBL Final FourRecord
Rivers Hoopers (champions)3–0
Aso Sky Hawks2–1
Gboko City Chiefs1–2
Maktown Flyers (2025 champions)0–3

Rivers Hoopers clinched the title with an 88–76 win over Gboko City Chiefs. They finished with a 92–90 overtime win against Maktown Flyers, the team that beat them 74–72 in the 2025 final. The title gives Nigeria a place at BAL 2027, Rivers Hoopers’ fourth BAL qualification.

Which is the best basketball team in Nigeria?

Rivers Hoopers are the best basketball team in Nigeria right now, and they’re joint-best of all time. The Port Harcourt “KingsMen” have won seven league titles (2011, 2012, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2024 and 2026), which ties them with Kano Pillars for the most. Maktown Flyers are their main current rival, having beaten Hoopers in the 2025 final. Aso Sky Hawks also showed they can compete by finishing second in the 2026 Final Four.

How do you join a basketball team in Nigeria?

For adult players, the realistic route is through the domestic game:

  1. Register with your state basketball association. State associations run the local leagues that lead into national competitions.
  2. Play in an organised competition. Universities, corporate leagues and state leagues are where NPBL clubs scout players.
  3. Attend club trials. NPBL clubs such as Rivers Hoopers, Kano Pillars and Gboko City Chiefs run trials ahead of each season. Watch their official pages for dates.
  4. Build film and stats. Coaches recruit from footage and box scores, so record your games.
  5. National team selection comes last. D’Tigers and D’Tigress call-ups go through the NBBF and FIBA eligibility rules, as Fizdale’s 14 NBA prospects show.

Be wary of anyone who charges a fee to “guarantee” a trial. Legitimate clubs don’t sell roster spots.

Is it worth betting on the Nigeria basketball team?

Qualifier markets are thin, and squads change from window to window. That makes for value but also volatility. Check the confirmed 12-man roster, who’s certified to coach and whether the game is at a neutral venue before you place a bet.
